Project MAS (Mothers and Schools) is an adolescent program serving teen parents in the San Antonio Independent School District and Southside Independent School District. The program provides support groups, parenting skills classes, homebound education and tutoring, and case management to pregnant teens.
- Homebound Instruction: During maternity leave, teen mothers receive instructional services in a group setting with TEA certified teachers. This allows students to remain current in schoolwork and attendance and facilitates the student's return to school.
- Case Management: Teen mothers also have the opportunity to receive case management services by licensed social workers who provide an array of services to ensure each student's success in school and beyond. They work very closely with the students to produce education and career goals and provide access to community resources. Students receive case management services throughout their high school careers.
- Parenting Program: The young mothers also participate in the Nurturing Program, which is a parenting curriculum designed for teen parents. The program is implemented at the crucial period immediately following delivery; when the basics of parenting are imperative. The mothers learn about nurturing parenting routines, ways to help their children build self-esteem and self-concept, developmental milestones and how to have fun with their children. Its purpose is to reduce the potential for child abuse by providing the skills needed to be effective and nurturing parents.
- Healthcare Services: To ensure healthy development of both the young mother and her child, health visits are scheduled as needed with El Centro del Barrio Healthcare Services. Participants can receive an array of services from pre and post-natal care to mental health counseling for the young mother and her immediate family.
- Home Visitations: The young mothers can also receive parenting services at home. The Nurturing Program curriculum is offered to the young parent and all members residing with her in the home. The goal of the home visitation program is to ensure health and safety for all children and young parents. The trained home visitors also provide referrals to community resources as needed.
